Tips and Tricks for Navigating the Holidays with Clear Aligners

It’s the holiday season — time for parties and get-togethers with friends and family. And while you celebrate, your Motto™ clear aligners are still hard at work to give you the gift of a new smile. But the merriment — and especially the travel — can make it more challenging to keep up with your treatment. Follow these tips to stay on track during the holidays so you can enjoy a happier, healthier new smile in the new year.

Wear ‘em when you’re sleeping. Wear ‘em when you’re awake.

Even during the holidays, you should keep wearing your clear aligners at least 20 hours each day. You’ll also need to stick with your hygiene routine, even as you’re out and about more. So, bring your clear aligners storage case, travel size toothbrush and floss to family gatherings and office holiday parties. Just make sure not to leave them in the White Elephant pile.

On Prancer, on Dancer, on Brushing and Flossing

At this time of year, it’s especially important to brush and floss your teeth after eating and drinking and before you put your clear aligners back in. You don’t want all that extra sugar from cookies or the acidity of spirits living rent-free in your aligners. If you can’t brush and floss, try to at least rinse your mouth out with water.

And remember, cool or room temperature water is the only beverage you should drink with your clear aligners in. Everything else, including alcohol, soda, juice, hot beverages and other drinks, should be enjoyed with your clear aligners out. So, be extra responsible with your liquid cheer.

Make a list and check it twice before traveling

If you’re going to be away from home, remember to pack everything on your clear aligners essentials checklist:

  • Your next set of aligners, just in case

  • Soft-bristled toothbrush

  • Travel size toothpaste (3 oz. or less if you’re flying)

  • Dental floss

  • Aligner case

  • Chewies

  • Cleaning tablets

And make sure to keep these essentials handy at all times. If you’re flying or taking a train, pack your clear aligners essentials in your carry-on bag in case you want to have a snack or beverage while on board.

Plan to make it a merry one

By planning ahead, you can enjoy all of the (not so) silent nights. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Always carry your clear aligners case with you so you’re not tempted to stash your aligners in a napkin

  • Gift yourself a “snacking” window — maybe set a timer with your phone at parties

  • When going somewhere new, try to scope out in advance where you can sneak off for a quick rinse with water
