What are partial dentures?

A partial denture is a removable dental prosthetic designed to replace one or more missing teeth while preserving your remaining natural teeth. Unlike full dentures that replace all of your upper or lower teeth, partial dentures are used when you are experiencing minor tooth loss. They help restore the look and function of your smile by filling in any gaps from missing teeth so you can eat and speak with ease again.

How do partial dentures work?

Another key difference of partial dentures is how they fit into your smile. While traditional full dentures replace at least one row of teeth and fit snugly against your natural gums, partial dentures clasp onto your neighboring teeth to stay secure. At Aspen Dental, we offer two main clasp options: fully metal clasps featured in our Cast Partial and “hidden” clasps that use flexible, gum colored-material to seamlessly blend into your gums used in our Flexilytes Combo partial.

Leading technology for your best partial denture fit

No matter which type of partial denture works best for your smile, we’ll make sure you get a solution that fits and feels comfortable. By using advanced digital scanning technology, we’ll capture the exact shape of your mouth, teeth and gums. Your denture will then be crafted based on your unique scans so you get a precise-fitting partial denture that looks natural, supports your cheeks and lips, and helps protect your remaining teeth.

We deliver you exceptional care and craftsmanship when you need it most—and that’s just the start.

Partial denture FAQs

Keep your partial in tip top shape with these key steps:

  • Soak your partial in a provider-approved denture solution overnight.

  • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings to maintain your partial so it fits and functions comfortably.

  • For your best long-term use, the ADA recommends getting your partial evaluated by a clinician for a replacement every 5-7 years.

When you first get your partial or flexible partial denture, it may take time to get used to the change in your smile. Here’s what to look out for:

If any of these issues persist, contact your care team and we’ll get you comfortable as soon as possible.

Absolutely. Here’s what you can expect:

  • You may experience an adjustment period as your gums and mouth get used to your partial.

  • Start with soft foods and gradually introduce firmer textures.

  • Practice speaking to improve your confidence and comfort while wearing your partial.

Partial dentures fill gaps so you can chew, speak, and smile with more ease. They're less invasive and more affordable than dental implants. Some people find the fit tricky at first or dislike the feeling of clasps. But with time and proper care, the benefits often outweigh the drawbacks.

You typically need at least one healthy tooth on each side of space missing teeth to support a partial denture. The exact number depends on the condition of your mouth, which a dental exam can help determine. Even with several missing teeth, we can restore your smile and confidence with a partial denture.

Yes. Partial dentures and flexible dentures help you eat, speak, and smile with more confidence. They fill gaps, protect your natural teeth, and are often a more affordable option than implants. Many people feel more at ease socially and emotionally after getting them.
